Did you know that Founding father, George Washington, was a bocce enthusiast?

The Fourth of July – like Thanksgiving, a truly American holiday that’s celebrated by all.  It’s a day to share with family, friends and a day to spend outside.

And what better way to bring everyone together than with bocce?  Bocce?  It’s been around for 5,000 years, played all over the world in different forms and has a rich American history too.

Founding father, George Washington, was a bocce enthusiast.  Our president figured out what the rest of the world knew – bocce is fun and family friendly.  Washington had a bocce court built at Mt. Vernon in the 1780’s so the he along with his family and friends could enjoy the game.

What makes bocce so appealing?  George figured out that bocce is pretty easy to learn, it’s inclusive and it’s fun.  Bocce can be played by 2 or more people and is a great forum for camaraderie and competition.

And now, you don’t have to build your own court to enjoy the game.  BocceNation.com has developed a portable bocce court, some pretty cool accessories along with simplified scoring that can get you and your family playing and enjoying bocce in mere minutes.

Bring the kids and all your guests...

Bring grandma, the kids and all your guests out and compete through the day and into the night.  Start your own competition and let the fireworks begin.  Winners get bocce bragging rights for the entire year!

Bocce goes great with BBQ’s.  Set your portable bocce court up in the backyard right next to the BBQ and you can keep one eye on the grill while you get into the game.  Start a new tradition this year and bring bocce into the backyard.

Bocce News, Hot off the Press!

Published by liz on June 13th, 2011 - in Bocce Ball

Here in the capital of the Bocce Nation, we keep up to date with all the hottest bocce news that’s fit to print (or blog, or Tweet, or post to Facebook…you get the idea). On this beautiful (but hot) Monday morning, we couldn’t be more excited to see bocce headlines popping up all over the web.

Frank Contey, a founding partner of the Landscape Guild and Terra Graphics, is over at Esquire sharing his fond memories of playing bocce growing up. Frank also highlights the beauty of summer time bocce. As he says, it’s great after a long day of sun soaked fun, is the perfect way to enjoy gorgeous summer evenings, and pairs well with grilling, great family and friends, and – of course – a good glass of wine.

Our favorite line: Everybody spoke Italian, and they would all be yelling and swearing. I had no idea what they were saying, but I could see how much fun they were having.”

The takeaway: Bocce + beach house = summer perfection. But if you don’t have a seaside estate, or room to build your own bocce court, have we got a solution for you!

Joshua Robinson did a great write-up for the WSJ online on Bryant Park’s petanque courts. It’s not bocce (although it’s close!) but we think our second-cousin in the lawn game family is another fantastic way to enjoy some social, active outdoor fun.

Our favorite line: “During a recent weekday lunch rush, the Bryant Park regulars played beside women in high heels and suited men who checked their BlackBerrys between turns.”

The takeaway: Just a short trip through the Alps from Italy, we think France’s answer to bocce is great. Or should we say, pétanque est magnifique!

Our friend Mario at Joy of Bocce included some information on National Bocce Day in his weekly newsletter. National Bocce Day is an industry-wide effort launched by bocce manufacturers, facilities, and leagues to promote the sport of bocce across the U.S. on August 13th, 2011. Mario is hosting a tournament in memory of Mr. Bill Hadley to benefit the Wounded Warrior Regiment, and will total the amounts raised by every NBD event to post on Joy of Bocce. If you don’t already receive his newsletter, you can subscribe here.

Our favorite line : “National Bocce Day – why not? Maybe Hallmark will jump on board. Let’s all try to run a charity event on August 13.”

The takeaway: Excitement for National Bocce Day is heating up all over the bocce community. We can’t wait to celebrate on August 13th, and we’re even more excited to see just how much funds the passionate players of our beloved sport will raise for great causes.

The Perfect Gift for Dad

Published by liz on June 7th, 2011 - in Bocce Ball

June is a month for celebrations. New grads are excited to start a new chapter in their lives, school children are rejoicing the official start of summer vacation, and Flag Day is the 14th (always a big holiday). But there’s one day to honor the guy who’s been there for every other celebration in your life, Dad.

Dads come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and one Dad’s singing bottle opener is another Dad’s silk Armani tie. But skip the same old gifts that Pops receives every year, and get him something fresh, unique, and exciting. Do you see where we’re going with this?

Vs.

Bocce-in-a-Bag is the true gift that keeps on giving. One stylish and strong carrying case contains everything Dad needs for years of bocce enjoyment. Not only will he get a kick out of this new, updated classic, but he’ll love the opportunity to use his gift with you.

A game of bocce is social, competitive, and above all else fun. Your father will relish the good times spent rolling out the “LWB” with his new favorite child (ha, take that sis!) And when he really still insists that he loves you all equally, you can rest assured that he loves his bocce kit just as much.

Best of all, you, Dad, and the entire family will have treasured memories of competition and camaraderie every time you play BocceNation.com bocce. Bocce brings people together, and nothing will make Dad happier on Father’s Day.
